In this case I would like to deliver a story entitled The Origin of Pamecutan Dynasty. Through this story, we will the history about puri Pamecutan and Pura Tambang Badung.
The Origin of Pamecutan Dynasty
Once upon a time in Bali, there was a kingdom named Singgasana which is located in Tabanan. The king of Singgasana was a wise ruler and he had one prime wife and several concubines. From the prime wife, he had a son named Arya Rangon, he is the oldest children, so he would replace his father as a king soon or later, but he had temper, envious, and jealous to his other brothers. From the concubines, he had several sons and daughters, but the most prominent of all was Ki Pucangan. He named Ki Pucangan since his mother came from the village of Buahan. Ki Pucangan was the favorite of Tabanan people, do you know why? Because he was kind and wise.
Arya Rangon hated Ki Pucangan to extreme point. Audience, do you know what is the reason? Because when Arya Rangon was grown up he had a chance to be named as the successor, since Tabanan people loved him.
“I can’t be like this. I have to put him away from the palace” Arya Rangon was thinking a way to eliminate Ki Pucangan from his palace. He contrived many attempts to kill Ki Pucangan, bu Ki Pucangan always manage to escape. One day, Arya Rangon told Ki Pucangan to do something dangerous.
“My brother Pucangan, would you like to help me? Arya Rangon asked for help to Ki Pucangan.
“What can I do for you? I’ll do it,” answered Ki Pucangan.
“Please cut the biggest bough of the Banyan Tree, which grew in the center of our kingdom, it disturbs us!” said Arya Rangon.
Audience, do you know, the sacred banyan tree was inhabited by evil spirits and demons and so far no one dared to even to climb or linger around the tree. But finally, Ki Pucangan obeyed his step brother’s order, he climbed the tree and then cut the biggest bough of the tree, he even sat on the falling bough, but amazingly he suffered no injury.
Time by time passed, finally Ki Pucangan realized his step borther’s wicked attention. So, he left the palace and went to Kubon Tingguh and he meditated there. After meditating for long time, the god of Kubon Tingguh came and asked him. “My son Ki Pucangan, what is the purpose of your meditation?”
“I meditated here to ask you a place where I can settle down and an occupation that suits for me,” answered Ki Pucangan.
“Unfortunately I have nothing to offer to you, but you can ask the god Batukaru, he will give a place to you,” said the tho god of Kubon Tingguh. Ki Pucangan took a leave and went to mount Batukaru.
After arriving at Mount Batukaru, Ki Pucangan meditated and the god Batukaru descended and spoke to him. “Alas, Pucangan mu son, I have nothing for you. Go to mount batur, you will get a place and occupation there. Haste my son! May you always be safe.” The god of Batukaru asked Ki Pucangan to go to Batur and he went there.
Like before, after he arrived at Batur, Ki Pucangan meditated in Ulun Danu Batur temple. Do you know what happened then? The goddess of Batur descended and brought a whip and a rope. The god addressed Ki Pucangan “Ki Pucangan my son, now I will show you a place where you can settle down with this whip. Now, look to south west!”
“There nothing my god,” said Ki Pucangan when he only saw a dark area there.
“No. There is a dark area and there is also a bright stone which shine like a star. There you will live as a king. Since the area is dark, you should name is Badung! When you manage to become the king of Badung, you have to build a temple to bind the wil of people of Badung with this rope and you should name it Nambangan Badung,” continued the god.
“I’ll be a king there? But I anything about governing a kingdom.” Said Ki Pucangan confusedly.
“Don’t worry! When you arrived there, asked a wise counsels from Kaki Buyut Lumintang who resides there. Take si Undagala from the stairs of this temple, he will be your loyal servant. Now go my son! Asked the goddess of Batur.
After receiving the boons, Ki Pucangan took a leave and went straight to the promised place. At the stairs of the temple, he found si Undagala and took him as a servant.
After arriving at the promised place, Ki Pucangan askesd wise counsels from Kaki Buyu Lumintang.
“Kaku Buyut Lumintang, the goddess of Batur asked me to come to you to ask for wise counsels from you before I become a king,” said Ki Pucangan to Kaki Buyut Lumintang.
“Are you Ki Pucangan? I’ll do it.” Kaki Buyut Lumintang granted Ki Pucangan’s request.
After his study on art of war and governing kingdom from Kaki Buyut Lumintang was finished, he fought the kingdom of Mengwi and seized Lumintang and Badung areas. Ki Pucangan was appointed the first king of Badung and built a temple and named it Puri Pamecutan. He also built a temple in accordance with the goddess of Batur instruction and named it Nambangan Badung temple.
